9 Reasons Chael Sonnen's Retirement Is A Big Blow To The UFC

8. Media-Friendly

Detractors and non-fans have a perception of MMA as a sport full of thugs and uneducated ruffians who beat each other to a pulp for money and glory because they€™re too stupid to make a living any other way. Athletes such as Rich Franklin and Brian Stan have done their part to dispel that notion, shattering that stereotype with every media appearance. Franklin€™s performance on The O€™Reilly Factor during a debate about the violence of MMA was particularly impressive and the perfect guy to speak for the integrity of the UFC. Chael has become the UFC€™s go-to-guy to represent the promotion in interviews with outside news outlets. Just as comfortable discussing politics and economics as he is double-leg takedowns and armbars, Sonnen is an articulate, eloquent speaker who gets his point across in an entertaining manner. His sit-downs with MMA journalist Ariel Helwani and appearances on Jim Rome€™s show were must-see viewing. He€™s engaging and witty and a fighter like that is a big plus for any organization. His talent for media relations has propelled him into a second career as an analyst and all indications are he€™ll continue that job now that he€™s hung up his four-ounce gloves. It€™s a position that€™s tailor-made to utilize his given talents and should provide him a comfortable retirement.
