9 Reasons Why Alan Shearer Chose Newcastle Over Manchester United

5. Shearer Dreamed Of Being The Hero Who Would End Newcastle United's Trophy Drought (Unfortunately That Never Happened)

Many times down the years, Shearer has spoken of how he could have won tons of silverware with Manchester United - but that even 50 medals could not compare to the sensation he could felt had he lifted one trophy with Newcastle United. When Shearer signed in 1996, the Magpies had not won a major trophy since the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, or a domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup. Shearer desperately wanted to see those 27 years of hurt come to an end - and he dreamed of being the man who could deliver that elusive trophy. Although he came so close on several occasions - Newcastle reached both the 1998 and 1999 FA Cup finals, as well as the UEFA Cup semi-final in 2004, only to lose all of those matches - unfortunately Shearer could not end the agonising wait. However, if he had not at least attempted to do so, it is something that Shearer would have regretted for the rest of his life.
