4. Shearer Wanted To "Come Home" To Newcastle United

Shepherd and even Shearer himself have revealed that one of the main reasons the England striker opted to return to the North East was because he wanted to "come home". Speaking to The Chronicle in 2014, Shepherd revealed what he and Shearer had talked about before the deal was done:

"Alan (Shearer) told us he'd met Man U but he wanted to 'come home' as you would. "He told us we had to speak to Jack (Walker). He (Shearer) spoke to him (Walker) first and told him he definitely wanted to sign for Newcastle."
