9 Terrible Swansea City Signings That Utterly Failed

5. Federico Bessone

The story of Federico Bessone is a roller coaster of emotions. The Argentinian left back, signed by Roberto Martinez in 2008, gave the Spaniard some options at left back with Bessone, Marcos Painter and Alan Tate all offering different qualities at full back. Bessone is certainly "a modern day full back": throwing defensive duties to the wind, he's always keen to get forward and contribute to the attack. A string of good performances caught the eye of Leeds United and Bessone decided to jump ship to Swansea's Championship rivals. The move was met with disdain by the Swansea faithful but the Argentinian was easily replaced. Fast forward just over a year and Bessone's Leeds career had been average at best and after making just six appearances he was shipped out to Charlton Athletic on loan. A permanent move couldn't be sealed and he was left without a club. Like a scolded puppy, Bessone returned to Swansea (under Brendan Rodgers now) to bolster their shortened defensive options. Fans were bemused by his return, especially considering his decline as a player. Despite this, he made his Premier League debut as a late substitute against West Brom. A year later, he departed Swansea once again, this time much to the amusement of the Swansea fans.
