Arsenal 0-0 Man Utd: 5 Lessons For The Red Devils

5. United Need New Recruits, But Still Have Quality

Though it's clear Moyes needs to bring in new recruits, there were some positives to take in from the draw at the Emirates. Firstly, United put in a solid defensive display - particularly in the second half. The partnership of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand was effective when Rafael was subbed off at half time and this will be missed, plus Chris Smalling showed an improved performance especially while utilised at right back. Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney had some solid link-up play, particularly the chance from van Persie towards the end where Rooney showed his world-class passing attributes. Michael Carrick was also solid and is one of the more consistent players for the club, while Antonio Valencia continued his improved form this season with a decent display. David De Gea pulled off a number of world-class stops and showed why he has the potential to become the finest goalkeeper in the Premier League. However, a number of positions still lack the quality needed for United to compete for the title. With the departing Vidic and ageing Ferdinand, a new centre-back or two should be a priority for the Scottish boss. A left back is needed after Evra's poor display, while a replacement for Paul Scholes is certainly needed.
