Arsenal: 4 Reasons Why Arsene Wenger Must Go

3. Wenger Is Tactically Inflexible And Does Not Play To Suit His Current Personnel

I've read many articles lamenting the fact that Arsene Wenger will not play a 4-4-2. And I agree with them and have written the exact same thing. I do not believe Arsenal should play this formation because the formation is vastly superior to a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 or any other formation, but because it better suits the Arsenal team as currently constituted. Arsenal€™s first choice wingers are not wide players. In fact in the squad right now there are three players who I believe are extremely effective in wide areas: Cazorla, who has not been played there, Santos, who for some reason masquerades as a left back, and Oxlade-Chamberlain. Podolski and Walcott are not wingers, they are both clinical finishers who would probably be best employed as second strikers. They do not add a tremendous amount of width to the team, nor do either man take on and beat opposing full backs. When Wenger acknowledges that Arsenal has 3 players that should be played down the middle, Giroud, Podolski, and Walcott, and plays them accordingly the better this team will perform. Further, on the same subject, Ramsey and Arshavin are also not best utilized out wide. Arshavin can be a brilliant playmaker when given license to operate in the center of the pitch and when his defensive duties are not as significant as those required on the wing. Ramsey is a central midfielder and when put on the right he tends to crowd into the middle and generally look aimless in his movement. He does not go past players out wide nor does he make the runs behind the defense required of a right winger. Ramsey is more likely to pop up in the center of the field than on the right leaving the team unbalanced and the middle of the pitch crowded. Instead of trying to fit the players to a particular system, Arsene should design a system around the players he has. If you have clinical finishers play with two strikers. Don€™t persist with systems that don€™t suit the personnel or require players to play out of position
