Arsenal: Best Ever Premier League 11

Best Left-Back: Ashley Cole

ashley cole The position of left-back was a difficult decision, as over their years in the Premier League Arsenal have shown an impressive ability to excavate superb full-backs in this position. However, one stood out above the competition, though it pains me to write this section as much as Arsenal fans will despise reading this. Leaving aside the controversial manner of his departure to Chelsea in 2006, there is no doubting that if anybody discusses the greatest left-backs in the world, Ashley Cole's name will consistently emerge. He is certainly more composed on the football pitch than in his social life, and was the perfect blend of defensive strength and attacking flair that made him a threatening presence down the left-hand side of the pitch. Ashley Cole is the first individual on this list to have been a part of Arsenal's unbeaten Premier League winning side of 2004, his second and final league championship with the club, and alongside this he was also able to win three FA Cups and two Community Shields, as well as competing in Arsenal's 2006 Champions League final. Furthermore, Cole was trained from the Arsenal youth system, making him an excellent example of a home-grown lad that turned out to be a world-class player. Quick, determined, and skilled in both attacking and defensive duties, it was arguable that by the time Cole left for Chelsea he had become the best left-back in the world during his time at Arsenal, and fortunately for the Blues he has continued to display his ability to this day. His name may leave a bitter taste in the mouth for any that recall the relentless transfer saga and comments Cole made about the club's board in 2006, but he has always been an Arsenal product through and through. In spite of any ill feeling his departure caused, I'm certain that he still maintains feelings of affection for the club that first showcased his immense talents.
