Arsenal Transfers - 10 Dream Replacements For Thomas Vermaelen

10. Toby Alderweireld

Toby Alderweireld only joined Atletico Madrid 12 months ago but could be looking for a second move in the space of a year following his disastrous debut season in Spain. The former Ajax star has been deemed surplys to requirements under Diego Simeone and spent most of 2013-14 on the bench, making a paltry 12 league appearances. And Arsenal could rescue him from his Madrid hell by bringing him to England this summer. Alderweireld has impressed in the few instances he has been given an opportunity and starred for native Belgium at this summer's World Cup, playing four games and helping the Red Devils to a surprise quarter-final berth. The multi-functional defender's arrival would also kill two birds with one stone. Alderweireld can play centre-back as well as right-back, meaning Arsene Wenger would not only be signing a replacement for Vermaelen but would also be providing extra cover for Mathieu Debuchy at right-back as well. The Belgian would provide a variety of options in defence and would certainly make a sensible acquisition.
