David Seaman left an indelible mark on Arsenal Football Club between the sticks, so much so that it was always going to be a herculean task to replace him.

A young two-cap England international by the name of Richard Wright was drafted in with the idea of being groomed for the number one spot two years before Seaman’s eventual departure.

Wenger felt the future was safe in Wright’s hands, but a shocking display during a 4-2 walloping at home to Charlton Athletic in November 2001 set the tone for a less-than-successful stint at Highbury.

It was all downhill from there, as the Gunners awarded aging Dave Seaman a one-year extension to his contract in 2002, prompting Wright to look elsewhere for first-team games.

The disconsolate ‘keeper walked out of North London after just 12 months for Everton, while Arsene Wenger relied heavily upon Seaman until the end of the next term when he finally snapped up Jens Lehmann.
