Arsenal fought off stiff competition for the signature of free agent forward Marouane Chamakh, who had shone at Bordeaux.

The French-born Moroccan international boasted a decent goal record of around one in every four matches, which he built upon by hitting 11 during his opening 22 games at his new club.

However, his confidence inexplicably disappeared overnight, as Chamakh struck just four more times within his next 46 outings.

Though his work-rate and ability to hold the ball up couldn’t be faulted, rarely has a striker looked so impotent in front of goal after his collapse in form.

Disappointing spells at West Ham United and Crystal Palace followed, before he dropped a division to join Cardiff City.
