Arsenal Transfers: 5 French Players The Gunners Might Get In January

5. Karim Benzema

Wenger is 'obsessed' with Real Madrid forward Benzema €“ if we are to believe the Daily Express. Reports from Spain suggest that luring the former Lyon man to Arsenal will be top priority in January. There is, however, little optimism on the continent that Real will welcome the Gunners' interest in Benzema during the winter window. Long-term targets can prove elusive, but one thing is certain €“ Arsenal need another striker to compete with Giroud to lead their line. Nicklas Bendtner is the current backup option, and scored on a rare start in the win over Hull in early December. Determined though the much-maligned Dane may be to take his opportunities, Wenger must be considering reinforcements up front. Benzema is a regular in Madrid as part of a stellar attacking line-up. He is into double figures for goals already, so for the moment Carlo Ancelotti is happy with him and his performances. In other words, getting Real to part with Benzema will be very difficult. Wenger may have more luck in prizing compatriot Raphael Varane away from the Bernabeu though. The 20-year-old defender has player just six games this term, but will need persuading he would not simply move from the fringes of one capital city club to another.
