Arsenal Transfers: 5 Goalkeepers To Replace Fabianski
5. Alex McCarthy
Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal during the January transfer window and the Gunners may well revive their interest this summer. The Royals managed to hold onto McCarthy then as the prospect of Premier League football was still a reality, however after missing out on the play-offs the 24-year-old may now want to leave. McCarthy was ever-present for Reading last season, replacing Adam Federici as the teams number one. His performances in the Championships have drawn the interest of a host of Premier League clubs, who are impressed by the the Englishmans impressive shot-stopping. In terms of being a number two for Arsenal, McCarthy certainly has the ability. At 6ft 4in he is an imposing goalkeeper who can cope with the physical nature of the Premier League, while his stunning performance against Liverpool in 2013 demonstrated that he has the skill set to make it at the highest level. At 24, McCarthy would provide direct competition for Szczesny. However, the Polish international is clearly Wengers number one and whether McCarthy would be happy playing second fiddle remains to be seen. He would, most likely, be the Gunners cup goalkeeper, just as Fabianski was this season. But, given his age, McCarthy may not be so keen on that idea.
