Though he has come out and suggested that he prefers to stay with Wolfsburg, and the club have quashed the opportunity to bring in Podolski in exchange for the Brazilian, there is still a chance that Wenger could push through a deal. That is particularly obvious given the fact that Arsenal need a defensive midfielder, and the Wolfsburg player has a £27m buyout clause in his contract. To date, that has proved too much of an impediment for Arsenal, but with rather unconvincing defensive performances so far this season, that price is shrinking by the day. Gustavo is the right blend of combative and technical and would be the right solution to protecting Calum Chambers, if he is to be the first choice to cover Thomas Vermaelen. Alternatively, Wenger could look to Sven Bender, though he'd likely cost as much, or his brother Lars, who is injured, and could be ignored because of the situation with Kim Kallstrom.
