It might not seem a smart move to get rid of the German with Olivier Giroud stuck in the treatment room for the rest of the year with a broken leg, but Lukas Podolski has been pushed far out of the first team picture and will be further when and if Wenger gets his main reported striking target in. Wenger has already openly admitted that he has a lot of striking options even with Giroud injured, and in his own words it's hard to see Podolski getting a game at all:
If I give you the number of strikers I have at the moment it's absolutely unbelievable. We have Sanogo, Sanchez, we have Walcott, we have Podolski, we have Giroud who will come back during the season and I forget maybe one or two. Campbell can play centre forward as well and of course we can be successful."
With Sanogo and Campbell the best options to support Sanchez as the first choice striker in Giroud's absence (ignoring for a minute the possibility of a new face arriving), Podolski will likely see himself forced out to the left. And it's fairly clear that the German would be happier playing as a striker somewhere else entirely, and getting rid of him might well be the best option for the development of Sanogo and Campbell.
