Despite news emerging yesterday that Sami Khedira had spectacularly turned his back on a move to North London in favour of reuniting with old Madrid boss Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, it seems that Arsene Wenger is on the verge of bringing another Spain based World Cup star to the Premier League with the acquisition of the German international. The sticking point had apparently been Khedira's demands of £130,000 a week in wages, with Arsenal unwilling to break their wage structure entirely to bring him in, but that is clearly no longer an issue, as Arsenal have cemented their interest by agreeing a deal with Real Madrid on the asking price of £20million. The 27-year-old has just a year left on his current contract, and will be pushed down the pecking order at Madrid by the impending arrival of his international team-mate Toni Kroos, who announced his plan to join the club in the wake of Germany's World Cup win. Arsenal have been in need of some defensive steel in their midfield for a while, with Alou Diaby likely to break down injured at any time, Jack Wilshere not offering the right sort of bite, Mathieu Flamini too old and Mikel Arteta better in a less atypically rigid defensive role. Khedira fits the mould exactly for the kind of player that Arsenal need to bring in, which is perhaps why Wenger is willing to offer the kind of wages the player is reportedly demanding. The German international would join up with compatriots Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil at The Emirates, and will become the second summer signing after Alexis Sanchez, unless he is beaten to North London by incoming French full-back Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle.
