Arsenal Transfers: Robin Van Persie's 6 Best Moves
6. Staying At Arsenal
Appeal: Champions League, loyalty and a strengthened squad Negatives: Weaker title claim Although it might seem that Van Persie has burnt his bridges, thanks to that probably ill-conceived statement last week, but Arsenal could well retain his services for the final year of his contract and gamble on the possibility that the team do well enough by January for Van Persie to reconsider his options entirely and sign an extension. It might not be a particularly likely development, given the probability that Van Persie would leave anyway, seeking an increased salary and would cost Arsenal the £25m they could demand this summer, but stranger things have happened and it wouldn't be the first time a player has make such a dramatic U-turn. Who would have put money on Steven Gerrard turning Chelsea down to stay at Liverpool? Obviously the situation is different, with Gerrard a born and raised Liverpool lad, but Van Persie may realise that he owes his development to Arsene Wenger and the Emirates club. But then, despite what fans would like to think, loyalty and love mean very little to professional footballers, unless it comes to bonus time, and it is a sorry symptom of the game that fans are duped into believing that players love the clubs they sign for. In most cases they don't - they are merely employers, and better prospects at a different club will always trump any romantic idea of "love". What do you think Arsenal fans?
