Barcelona Transfers: 5 Players They Should Sign This Summer

2. Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

It is no secret that Barcelona are in need of central defenders. For years they have coped w
ith players filling in. Yaya Toure, Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano are a testament to the La Liga champions papering over the cracks rather than purchasing an out-and-out defender. The departure of club legend Carles Puyol should finally force Barca into action. Puyol has been a loyal servant to Barca, occasionally being the sole true defender on the pitch and thus forcing him to cover for those around him. Replacing him will be a hard task, but the acquisition of Mats Hummels would go a long way to achieving that goal. At 25-years-old, the central defender is entering the best years of his career. His performances in the Champions League over the last two seasons have shown that he is capable of competing on the biggest stage of all. At 6ft 4in tall, Hummels would provide some height to a Barca team that is often criticised for being out muscled. Crazily, Hummels was sold to Dortmund from Bayern for around £3million in 2009. Today, he is valued at around six times that amount.
