Probably the only likeable bloke in the back four, Kompany left the Premier League at the end of last season having secured yet another Premier League title for Man City. Last season was one of the tightest, twistiest seasons ever, and Kompany’s long range piledriver against Leicester was one of the most decisive moments.

Signed by Mark Hughes as a lesser known holding midfielder from Hamburg, Kompany went on to become one of the Premier League’s finest defenders. Man City have had flair ever since the money arrived, but they’ve counted on Kompany’s grit numerous times to get them over the line.

As well as his Leicester screamer, his header against Man Utd which turned the tide in 2012 is right up there. For all their huge money signings, bargain buy Kompany was City's heartbeat.

It goes without saying that he was an unbelievable defender, always in the right place at the right time. City haven’t just lost a talent with him, but a role model for their younger defenders too.

Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Jamie Carragher and Tony Adams can count themselves unlucky to miss out, but they can console themselves on massive piles of medals, can’t they?
