Best Premier League XI Ever
Centre Mid: Frank Lampard/Steven Gerrard
England’s Golden Generation proved these two couldn’t play together, and choosing between them was just too difficult, so it made sense to have them both.
Each was the heartbeat of their team for the best part of a decade, true box to box players known for barnstorming runs and hammering the ball into the top corner. Lampard fared better in goals, fourth on the all time list with 177. Stevie G is some way behind, finishing on 120 in 18th place.
Lampard was playing in a better team though, and you could certainly make the argument Gerrard was more important to Liverpool than Lampard was to Chelsea. Still, twice Lampard scored the goals which mathematically won Chelsea the league (though neither season was particularly in doubt), showing how vital he was to Chelsea's wins.
Unfortunately, Gerrard’s defining moment was probably his slip, with his legendary Liverpool moments coming more in the FA Cup and Champions League. Hopefully, he’ll be remembered for his ups more than that infamous down.
If it really has to be one, Lampard’s three Premier League medals to Gerrard’s zero splits the tie in Frank’s favour, but only just.
