Britain's 50 Greatest Sports Personalities Of 2012

42. Laura Robson

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmKi_vO09pQ Sport - Tennis Tennis is one of the few sports across the world where female players receive equality in terms of prize money and media exposure with men. For both genders however, British tennis success has been lacking for many years, although the arrival of a certain Scotsman (who we€™ll get to later) has recently changed things, and others have the potential to follow him. One of these is Laura Robson, who won the 2007 junior girls event at Wimbledon, but has faced early exits in nearly every tournament she has entered as a professional since then. That changed this year, as the youngster became the first British woman to reach a WTA main-tour final since 1990, putting in a series of performances that have seen her awarded the Sunday Times Young Sportswoman Of The Year accolade, shared with fellow tennis player Heather Watson, who won the HP Open in Japan to become the first British winner of a tour event since 1988. Though Watson may currently be ranked three places higher than Robson (50 to 53) in the current world rankings, the latter can also boast of an Olympic silver medal, won in mixed doubles, which should act as a strong base to build upon as she approaches what is only her nineteenth birthday.

41. Michael Jamieson

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KegcjFYu4ek Sport - Swimming Despite the country€™s overwhelming success in a number of different sports at the Olympics, the games were a disappointing one for Britain€™s swimmers, who won no gold medals after Rebecca Adlington saw her attempts to defend both of her titles from Beijing thwarted by the respective efforts of Camille Muffat and Katie Ledecky, finishing third in both the 400m and 800m freestyle events. Despite the sport being the only one not to see its medal target reached, a sterling effort was put into the breaststroke events by Scotsman Michael Jamieson, who broke the British record for the 200m three times on his way to the final. Finishing just 0.12 seconds adrift of the world record, Jamieson was only denied gold by an exceptional swim from Hungarian rival Daniel Gyurta, being made to settle for a respectable silver. This was the country€™s best achievement in the pool this time around, giving the twenty-four year-old plenty to celebrate.
