Whilst in between Mourinhos spells, there was a very successful period for the Blues. Carlo Ancelotti had led the club to their first ever league and cup double, and he heaped praise on Ray Wilkins as a huge part of that. Chelsea legend Wilkins returned to the club in 2008, and stayed there under three managers, winning a league title and two FA Cups. Ancelotti said, "Ray is one of those select few, always present, noble in spirit, a real blue-blood, Chelsea flows in his veins. Without him we wouldn't have won a thing." With Chelsea top of the table in November 2010, they told the former club captain his contract wasnt being renewed, and sacked him immediately. Theyve never explained why, but his exit messed with a side who were flying, and just over two weeks later they were knocked off the top. They finished that season trophy-less, for which Ancelotti took the blame, but it all started with the bizarre decision to sack Wilkins.
