Chelsea: 10 Most Costly Mistakes In Blues History

1. Buying Fernando Torres

There was quite a lot of fanfare when Fernando Torres left Merseyside for Chelsea in 2011 in a British record deal. £50 million changed hands as Torres moved to the Bridge, and he was the follow up to Shevchenko as Abramovich eyed a glamour buy. Despite the fact that Torres was off form, and was dropped for the World Cup final due to his awful performances, Chelsea fans convinced themselves he€™d come good. That old line about form and class would be repeated for months, but in truth Torres never really arrived. During his spell at the club Torres had more rumoured come backs than managers, which is saying something when you remember that he had five of them in three and a half years. Like Shevchenko, Torres was well past his best, but what made the Spaniard worse is that he forced out a talented youngster. Daniel Sturridge€™s path was blocked by Abramovich€™s demands to play the £50 million failure, and he€™s now taken up Torres€™ old role as Liverpool€™s main striker. Despite winning three trophies at the club, Torres has to be the worst signing that Chelsea ever made.
