3. Spending £50 million on Fernando Torres
If you thought the £30 million Abramovich ploughed into AC Milan's coffers for the services of Andriy Shevchenko was a monumental mistake, you will be absolutely aghast when you recall the £50 million he spent on buying Fernando Torres from Liverpool in January 2011. Much like the decision to buy Shevchenko, it initially appeared to have been a fantastic signing for Chelsea. The Spaniard had scored 81 times in 142 overall appearances at Anfield but, much like the decision to buy Shevchenko, the move has been an unmitigated disaster. Torres hasn't scored a league goal all year long and only managed 11 in his first full season at the club, his lowest tally for the season since his formative years at Atlético Madrid. It's fair to say he has been a massive flop at Stamford Bridge and has failed to live up to his inordinate transfer fee. Considering Michu, who cost Swansea City just £2 million last year, has scored three more goals than Torres during the current campaign, you'd imagine the Spaniard's days at Chelsea are surely now numbered.
