Chelsea Transfer News: £25m Oscar Deal Done
Roberto Di Matteo adds Brazilian playmaker to his squad from Internacionale
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea have beaten London rivals Tottenham to the £25m signing of Brazilian wonderkid Oscar from Internacionale. The young playmaker will join new signings Marko Marin and Eden Hazard at Stamford Bridge as Roman Abramovic continues to add eye-catching acquisitions to his squad, and shows his willingness to spend money to bring the most exciting talents to the club to close the gap in the league that opened up last season. Former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas was said to be closing in on Oscar's signature, after bidding £11m offer last week but Roberto Di Matteo has now pipped the Portugese man to a deal. Oscar, who is described as a "typical Brazilian number 10" caught the eye last summer when he became the first player to score a hat-trick in the FIFA Under 20 World Cup final against Portugal, and he has subsequently attracted the attentions of both Real Madrid and Barcelona. He can play both as a playmaker or in an attacking role behind the striker and can also play on either flank of midfield. Before he joins up with his new team, the Brazilian will be on show at the Olympics, where Chelsea fans will be hoping to see some glimpses of the attacking flair that Di Matteo seems intent on adding to a Chelsea side who attracted a lot of criticism last year for their defensive style. This signing is another bold statement of intent from Abramovich as the owner looks to develop the team into a more fluid, attacking one - taking a leaf out of the Barcelona book. Oscar will become the fourth Brazilian currently on the Chelsea books, joining energetic midfielder Ramires, David Luiz and youngster Lucas Piazon. Whether he will immediately be considered for first team duties remains to be seen, with youngsters generally limited to substitute appearances, but he is certainly one for the future, and at that £25m price-tag Chelsea fans may be forgiven for expecting to see a finished article and not a prospect.
