Chelsea Transfer News: Thibaut Courtois Casts Doubt On Future

On-loan Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has today admitted he is unsure whether he will return to Stamford Bridge once his spell at Atletico Madrid is over, according to the BBC. Courtois was signed by Chelsea from Genk in 2011 but has yet to make a single appearance for the Blues, instead spending each of the last three seasons on loan at Atletico. And now, ahead of his side's crunch Champions League final encounter with rivals Real Madrid, the 22-year-old has admitted it "may not be the healthiest thing" for him to return to west London. The young goalkeeper, who has established himself as No.1 for Diego Simeone's side, fears his playing time will diminish should he return to Chelsea this summer, given the form of Petr Cech. Courtois said:
"The two of us want to play everything. Nobody will be happy to play in only the League Cup or FA Cup. Things are unclear at the moment."
The loaned star added that the high standards set by Cech, who has been with Chelsea for 10 years, meant it might be best for both if he followed a different career path elsewhere.

"I have the biggest respect for Petr Cech. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world so I think putting him and me in the same team is not the healthiest thing in the world.

We will see in the next week if we can sit together with Chelsea to find something for next year, find out what they want, what my desire is. We will see."

Courtois played against Chelsea in the semi-final of this season's Champions League, after Uefa waved a clause in his loan agreement that he would be unable to play against his parent side.

Atletico went on to knock the Blues out of the competition, with Courtois making a series of match-winning saves.

"It was strange and weird knocking out Chelsea," admitted the Belgian international.
"Normally when you win a semi-final you celebrate really hard but I didn't do it because Chelsea bought me and gave me the opportunity to play for Atletico for three years. I think I showed respect to the Chelsea players and supporters and they to me."
Quite whether those supporters will be seeing Courtois at Stamford Bridge as a player or a member of the opposing team in years to come remains to be seen.
