1. Nemanja Matic
Alternatively, Chelsea could raid Benfica for another of their players instead, and re-sign Nemanja Matic. Matic spent two seasons at Stamford Bridge between 2009-11 but found himself loaned out to Vitesse Arnhem and ultimately sold to Benfica having managed just two appearances for the Blues. Since then though, the midfielder has started to make a name for himself and a number of impressive performances last season helped earn him the title of Primeira Liga Player of the Year for 201213, and
put him back on Chelsea's radar to boot. The Blues are keen on re-signing the 24-year-old and, while Matic isn't a defender, admittedly, could still be brought in as a replacement for Luiz given the Brazilian at times operates in a midfield role. His purchase would also provide Chelsea with a potential, long-term replacement for Frank Lampard, though would cost a whopping £38 million. That's the value of his release clause at Benfica, which is indicative of just how much he has improved since leaving Chelsea.
