England vs Montenegro - How The Three Lions Should Line Up

Right-Back - Kyle Walker

kyle walker With just five goals conceded so far this season, Tottenham Hotspur have the third-best defensive record in the Premier League and a lot of that is down to Kyle Walker. Having been loaned out four times by the Lilywhites - to Northampton, Sheffield United, QPR and Aston Villa - the 23-year-old has gone on to establish himself at White Hart Lane as first-choice right-back over the past three seasons. He started England's last game, against Ukraine, keeping a clean sheet in the otherwise-dire 0-0 draw, and since then has kept two more clean sheets with Spurs, starting and finishing every game. Chris Smalling can play right-back, but his best position is at centre-half, and Walker is the more natural fullback and should get the nod his recent club form deserves.

Centre-Back - Gary Cahill

Gary Cahill was quite easily England's stand-out performer in the 0-0 draw against the Ukraine, with the defender himself rating that performance alongside his very best for Chelsea. And when you consider they include the game against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final and Uefa Super Cup, Benfica in the Europa League final, and Manchester United, you start to realise Cahill is the man for the big occasions. With Rio Ferdinand and John Terry recently retiring from the international scene, Cahill has revelled as the obvious first name on the team sheet at centre-back. His understudies Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are not showing enough consistency at club level for Manchester United to suggest they could displace him on Friday, and Cahill will again be relied upon for another crunch game.

Centre-Back - Phil Jagielka

Phil Jagielka Phil Jagielka has marshalled Everton to an undefeated streak in the Premier League that was only ended, seven games into the season, with defeat to Manchester City last weekend. "Jags", as he is affectionately known by his peers, has been in superb form of late, forging a close understanding with Cahill at the heart of England's back-four in recent months. The two looked absolutely solid against the Ukraine last month with Jagielka even saying recently that his partnership with the Chelsea man is "getting better all the time". Indeed, the two have started the Three Lion's last five matches together and it would surely be disruptive of Hodgson to break up that partnership now.

Left-Back - Leighton Baines

With Ashley Cole withdrawing from the England squad with a rib injury sustained while playing for Chelsea against Norwich earlier this month, his obvious replacement is Leighton Baines. Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs has been called into the squad as emergency back-up, but both of the 24-year-old's England caps have come in friendlies and he will not be risked in such a high-profile game. Baines has been in amazing form for Everton and with teammate Jagielka also in the side, seems the clear choice at left-back given the cohesion the two have forged together down the years in the Premier League. Like Jagielka, Baines has been instrumental for the Toffee's over the course of their 6-game undefeated streak in the topflight, and has even been known to score a goal or two, such as those superb free-kicks against West Ham.
