England's Euro 2021 Starting XI

8. Joe Gomez - Centre Back

Potential candidates: Tyrone Mings and John Stones.

One of the harder positions to nail down in this England squad, Joe Gomez has been something of an unsung hero for Liverpool. Over the past couple of years Gomez has been fighting to play alongside Virgil van Dijk regularly and this seems to be his season. Another full season partnered with one of the best centre backs in the world won't do him any harm.

The 23-year-old has ten clean sheets in 19 appearances this season in the Premier League and his absence in Liverpool's loss to Watford was deemed a key factor in their poor defensive performance.

The London born defender has also shown how important versatility is in modern football; his ability to play right-back will not go unnoticed. Versatility is vital in international tournaments - that's surely the only reason Fabian Delph was picked for the World Cup.

Gomez is vying for his position alongside Harry Maguire against Mings and Stones. Unless Stones gets first-team football next season he can count himself out of the starting 11, regardless of how much Southgate likes him. Similarly, Mings needs to become less error-prone if he wants to feature.
