European Football Weekend Review - Lionel Messi Saves Barcelona's Blushes

Spain

The new La Liga season started last week, with Barcelona demolishing Real Sociedad and the reigning champions earning only one point against Valencia. The Catalan side continued their 100% start to the season with a close 2-1 win over Osasuna, with Lionel Messi scoring two goals. Barcelona were behind for a majority of the game but the Argentinian genius secured the points. Real Madrid were surprised by Getafe, who came from one behind to win 2-1. It leaves Madrid with only one solitary point, five behind Barcelona. That margin may seem unimportant now but during the latter stages of the season they could be vital, not only to Madrid€™s title challenge but to the future of Jose Mourinho. Rayo Vallecano continued their brilliant start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Real Betis. Despite the loss of Michu to Swansea, Vallecano have now earned six points from their opening two matches. Sevilla and Malaga both drew in their respective games to put them on four points. Despite the loss of Santi Cazorla to Arsenal and the current worries over their financial security, the Qatari owned club have done a good job of ignoring the speculation. Valladolid vs Levante and Atletico Madrid vs Athletic Bilbao are taking place on Monday.
