Everton 2-0 Chelsea: 6 Things We Learned

4. Both Red Cards Were Justified

The only thing surprising about Diego Costa€™s red card was that it is his first in English football. Ever the hot-headed one, the Spaniard looked like a liability from kickoff. He was riled within nine minutes, receiving his first caution for taking down Barry after coming off second best in a challenge between the pair. They clashed ferociously in the 84th minute and the forward€™s retaliation earned him a second yellow, with the former Manchester City midfielder also entering referee Michael Oliver€™s notebook. Replays appeared to suggest that Costa bit Barry on the neck during the incident, but the Everton man has since insisted that this was not the case. Overzealous Barry notched up a second red of the season moments later for a lunge on Cesc Fabregas, a needless caution the player could have zero complaints about. Oliver made the right call on both occasions and did well to keep the lid on a stormy contest.
