Nessun Dorma, Gazza’s tears and Toto Schillaci. Italia 90 is undoubtedly a classic tournament- especially for England fans. However, for England’s vanquishers West Germany, it was their third World Cup title and their final tournament before reunification.

Whilst England fans herald Italia 90 as their greatest chance to win a World Cup since 1966, the West German side that beat them so cruelly on penalties were an efficient, effective and talented unit, with the likes of Matthäus, Klinsmann and Völler symbolising their superior quality.

Having made their way to the final, West Germany were involved in arguably the most cynical and disappointing final in World Cup history, with two Albiceleste red cards symbolic of an Argentinian side happy to tactically foul their way to penalties.

With Argentina’s game-plan largely working, Brehme broke Argentinian hearts with an 85th minute winner from the spot. The West German side of 1990 were a hard to beat side, with the quality to punish any mistakes.

They notably weren’t too bad at penalties either.
