Spain’s triumph in 2010 somewhat feels like a nod to the nearly ran Dutch sides of the '70s and '80s. With a focus on technique, movement and every player being comfortable on the ball, Spain achieved a near perfect interpretation of Total Football.

The side that triumphed in South Africa mirrored the European dominance of Barcelona, with Iniesta, Xavi, Pique, Puyol, Busquets and Pedro all starting in the final, with Barcelona bound David Villa also starring.

The side dominated possession, pressed intensely and worked opportunities through intricate passing moves, with Real Madrid duo Casillas and Ramos adding solidity and bite respectively to the defence.

Criticisms of the side would be a lack of goals and the disappointing final against the Netherlands, though that was largely due to robust Dutch challenges and some questionable refereeing decisions.

Spain triumphed and whilst the side arguably peaked two years later at Euro 2012, this incarnation represented a shift in modern football that would dominate the game for almost a decade.
