Every UEFA Champions League Final Ranked From Worst To Best

16. Bayern Munich 2-1 Borussia Dortmund (2013)

This all-German affair proved a lively one, coming at a time when Jürgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund team had upset the applecart in Germany, winning back-to-back Bundesliga titles in the previous two seasons – but change was afoot.

In the weeks leading up to the final, Bayern had struck back in typically brash style with the announcement that Dortmund’s homegrown star Mario Gotze would be joining the Bavarians that summer.

It was a transfer that left a sour taste in the mouths of neutrals everywhere and added to the growing sense that Dortmund needed to win for the good of football.

Klopp’s team started well, creating chances in the first half even if they lacked a little finesse at the key moments.

Bayern’s European pedigree was starting to show though and, on the hour mark, they broke through with Mario Mandzukic scoring from close range following good work from Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery out wide.

Though Dortmund rallied and eventually levelled from the penalty spot from Ilkay Gundogan, there was a sense of inevitability about Bayern’s winner, which came in underwhelming style, via a weak, scuffed shot from Robben which trickled past Roman Weidenfeller to seal victory.

Maybe it was the lack of goals in the first half, or the lack of standout goals in general, but the final isn’t one that’s fondly remembered. The good guys lost.
