Every UEFA Champions League Final Ranked From Worst To Best

22. Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid (2016)

Zinedine Zidane celebrated his first Champions League success as Real Madrid manager in 2016, but it came in the most fortuitous of circumstances at the San Siro.

Though Real dominated early in the game, Sergio Ramos’ scrambled opener for Los Blancos was undoubtedly scored from an offside position, with referee Mark Clattenburg later expressing regret at failing to disallow it.

In any event, Atletico Madrid should have been level three minutes into the second half after Clattenburg awarded Diego Simeone’s team a penalty.

A matter of inches proved the difference once again, with Antoine Griezmann’s spot kick slamming off the underside of the bar and away to safety.

Atleti did eventually equalise through Yannick Carrasco, 11 minutes from time, and looked the more likely to find a winner before the game headed to extra time.

An uneventful 30 minutes followed before yet another round of spot-kicks, where Atletico once again came undone with full back Juanfran desperately unlucky to see his penalty rebound off the inside of the post.

That gave Ronaldo the chance to take all the plaudits with the final decisive penalty, despite a largely anonymous performance from the Portuguese.

An uneventful final, lacking in memorable goals, what made it all the more difficult to bear was the sense that Real won it without ever getting out of first gear.
