Every UEFA Champions League Final Ranked From Worst To Best

19. AC Milan 2-1 Liverpool (2007)

Milan gained some modicum of revenge two years on from their dramatic capitulation at the hands of Liverpool in Istanbul, but the rematch in Athens was nowhere near as dramatic or entertaining a spectacle.

Filippo Inzaghi was the unlikely hero, having been picked to start by Carlo Ancelotti ahead of Alberto Gilardino despite scoring just twice in Serie A that season.

Ancelotti’s gamble soon paid off with the Italian goal hanger giving the Rossoneri the lead in first-half injury time, albeit in fortuitous fashion, deflecting an Andrea Pirlo free kick past the wrong-footed Pepe Reina.

Liverpool, who had been the best team up until that point, continued to dominate at the start of the second half, with Steven Gerrard guilty of missing a great chance to equalise, having found himself one-on-one with Milan keeper Dida.

Though the Rossoneri’s performance was workmanlike at best it featured at least one standout moment. It came eight minutes from time when Kaka - quiet until then despite being the tournament’s best player that season - put Inzaghi through with a sublime pass.

The Italian expertly took the ball around Reina to score and all but seal victory. Though Dirk Kuyt pulled one goal back with a minute to go, there would be no grand comeback this time with the final whistle sparking joyous scenes among Milan players and supporters.
