Most Expensive Spurs XI That Failed To Deliver

3. David Bentley (£15 Million)

Poor David Bentley finds himself in an awfully large number of negative articles here at WhatCulture.com, but nobody should really be surprised by that. The former England man cost Spurs £15 million - which was one of the largest fees they'd paid for a player at that point (2008) - and he failed to deliver quite spectacularly. Touted as the next David Beckham, Bentley had impressed in his time at Blackburn Rovers, earning himself a reputation as a set-piece specialist and scoring a decent number of goals for a right winger - but it just didn't work out at White Hart Lane. Aside from a great goals against rivals (and one of his former clubs) Arsenal, he did very little and was loaned out no less than four times (to Birmingham, West Ham, FC Rostov and previous club Blackburn, respectively) and couldn't get in the first team - largely due to what some people say was a bad attitude. He has now retired from football, even though he has only just turned 30 years of age.
