Most Expensive Spurs XI That Failed To Deliver

4. Wilson Palacios (£12 Million)

Having previously played for Olimpia in his homeland of Honduras, Wilson Palacios impressed enough in one season with Wigan Athletic in the Premier League for Spurs to splash out £12 million on the midfielder. The battling enforcer's time at White Hart Lane wielded mixed levels of success. He started his Spurs career very well €“ notching an assist in his first match against Bolton Wanderers and earning the Man of the Match award in his second match in the North London derby against Arsenal - but he struggled to hold down his place in the team after that and he was limited to 21 appearances in his second and final season at the club. Palacios would be shipped out to Premier League rivals Stoke City for a fee of around £6 million in 2011, giving Spurs a 50% loss on a player they had bought just two years earlier €“ and, at 27, a player who should really have been in his physical prime. He wasn't a bad player for Spurs, but a £12 million player he certainly was not.
