Fabricio Coloccini claims that it "hurts" to be booed by your travelling fans - but he should put himself in the position of the Newcastle United supporters who made the trip down to the King Power Stadium first thing on a Saturday morning, only to watch their side meekly roll over. Close to 2,000 Newcastle fans were in the away end as the Magpies lost 3-0 to Leicester City - having fallen behind after less than 40 seconds, and then having had two players sent off in close to cowardly fashion. They endured 90 minutes of hell, having paid substantial sums to be there, as they continued to watch their beloved club plummet towards the depths of the Championship by weakly succumbing to their eighth successive defeat - yet Magpies skipper Coloccini was almost pining for sympathy in his post-match interview, despite claiming he "understood" the Toon fans' frustrations. The Newcastle captain, who has been the leader of a defence that has conceded 18 goals in eight matches, responded to the Magpies' travelling contingent singing "you're not fit to wear the shirt" by saying:
"It hurts when you go over to the fans at the end and they are booing you. But we have to understand - and I do - that they are disappointed and they have spent a lot of money watching us. "Not just this week, but also other weeks, they have to come a long way. It's not just this game they have had to have that disappointment - it has been going on for quite a few games now. "You have to go over there and say thank you - it's important - but I guess they didn't want to see us. We know we are not doing the right things. Of course we can understand the way the supporters are feeling right now, but we have to get our heads up and be strong."
Newcastle have just three matches to save their Premier League status - and their captain must demand a reaction from both himself and his teammates. That is the very least Toon fans deserve.
