Get through it in tact, and perhaps their Premier League and Champions League aspirations could finally be taken seriously. Crunch games against Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United and, to perhaps a lesser extent, Southampton and Marseille, looked, on paper, to have been a formidable task for the Gunners. However, with four wins from those five games, it's fair to say Arsene Wenger's side have proven most of their doubters wrong, and one man who has helped them achieve that is Per Mertesacker. Though much of the praise recently has been lavished on attackers such as Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil, it is the latter's Germany teammate who has kept them solid at the back. Keeping three clean sheets in his last four games, Mertesacker looks much-improved from last season and it appears as though Arsenal finally have a centre-back they can rely upon. Next up for the Gunners is a trip to Cardiff which, as both Manchester clubs have found out this season, won't be an easy task, but I'm tipping Arsenal to keep another stop-out in Wales. Mertesacker got an assist in the last gameweek and, at £5.7 million, is reasonably cheap, too.
