Despite the Arsenal's 3-goal reverse on the opening day, he's definitely one to watch. Mertesacker is the first man into Arsenal's back line, and a good player to have to hoover up the clean sheets, as he got 14 in 34 games last season. At £5.5 million, he's also pretty affordable for a regular starter for a top Premier League outfit. However, if they continue to concede goals, you might be better off finding a defender from somewhere else. Also, he's not a defender you can rely on for a goal or an assist; for that reason, you may want to jettison him at some stage into the early season if Arsenal can't shut up shop.
