1. Istanbul
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubK8A-yfm3w What more can be said about that night in Istanbul? It's almost become Holy. Obviously up there with nights such as Rome and Paris. The inspiring roles of Gerrard, Dudek and Hamann have been discussed and dissected countless times. So too has the role that Jamie Carragher played that night. Struggling with intense bouts of cramp he continued to stretch for seemingly impossible challenges - nicking the ball just as Shevchenko and Kaká seemed certain to score. There were around three match saving interceptions and tackles made by Carragher during those visibly painful bouts of cramp and each one was harder than the last. The first came when he stretched for a cross at the near post as Crespo aimed to pull the ball back for an open Kaká - Carragher just got there ahead of the Brazilian and the slightest of touches ensured the midfielder powered his shot over the bar with the goal almost at his mercy. The second came when Shevchenko picked up the ball around thirty yards from goal and decided to power at the Reds' backline - Carragher tracked the run and beat the Ukrainian to the ball after he had initially tapped the ball past the number 23. The third amazing stretch came deep into extra time when Serginho powered a low cross into the Liverpool penalty area - Carragher stretched and toe poked the ball to safety, somehow keeping the ball in at the same time as to not concede a corner. Amazing stuff. It's difficult for some people to see how a centre back can be covered in so much glory despite letting three goals in but anyone who has watched the game will see that Carra was the reason Liverpool won the Champions League that night. His second half and extra time display was the stuff of school boy dreams and you'd be hard pressed to find a better defensive display. What a special player. He will be sorely missed. I wish Jamie the best of luck at Sky and beyond! Legend. Did you agree with our choices? Let us know in the comments section below!
