Liverpool: 10 Highly-Rated Talents Who Threw It All Away

5. Emile Heskey

In March 2000, Heskey broke Liverpool's transfer record when moving from Leicester City for £10M. He had been a prolific goalscorer at the Walkers Stadium, winning the League Cup with the club twice, however he pretty spectacularly failed to convert his form to the Reds. Many believed that he would form a prolific partnership with Michael Owen up front, however he was far too inconsistent to do so: he would often lose the ball too easily and looked overweight and under-fit for a lot of his time at Anfield and his finishing in front of goal wasn't as deadly as it should have been. In patches, Heskey showed his true ability and scored some magnificent goals. Nonetheless, after scoring 14 in his first full season during the 2000-01 campaign, that tally got lower and lower until netting just seven times in his final year on Merseyside that led the former England International eventually moving to Birmingham City. His chance to form an excellent partnership with Owen was very much the most disappointing factor of Heskey throwing his chance at a top club away, as the pair had the means to make a great force up front.
