Liverpool: 10 Highly-Rated Talents Who Threw It All Away
4. Andy Carroll
After the sale of Fernando Torres to Chelsea on deadline day in 2011, Liverpool were left in a tricky situation and forced to sign Carroll for a whopping £35M from Newcastle United. Although it was a hefty price-tag, it was by no means at the time a terrible signing: he had aided his former club to win the Championship one season earlier and netted 11 goals in 19 games in his first top flight campaign. Carroll was an option that Liverpool to not have previously - an aerial threat - but unfortunately, the striker never found his form at Anfield. Despite struggling with injuries in his first season, he found the net just four times during the 2011-12 season from 35 Premier League games. Carroll never looked settled at Liverpool and always looked overwhelmed to live up to his vast price-tag and had off field problems when arrested a few months before his move due to allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. He eventually left from West Ham United in 2012 and it now seems that his chance to play for another top class club could be well and truly gone.
