9. Albert Riera

Albert Riera's career started with so much promise. In his debut game against Manchester United, he was electrifying, injecting speed and flair into the Liverpool attack. It's a shame the rest of his Liverpool career didn't go the same way.
His £8 million fee seemed reasonable and all early evidence seemed to suggest Benitez had found another Spanish bargain but Riera started to clash with the manager, openly criticising his methods during an interview. From the moment he went against Benitez in public his days at Liverpool were numbered. He was continually left out the squad and the £8 million spent went down the drain. Riera's early performances are a glimpse of the player Liverpool thought they were getting and not the abject failure they did get.
