Liverpool: 8 Things Brendan Rodgers Must Do To Improve In 2015
6. Learn To Win Ugly
One of the most frustrating things about being a Liverpool fan is their inability to win ugly. It has always been that way during the Premier League era, with Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez succeeding slightly with it at times but not always. Rodgers simply cannot master it, and it is an art. United, Arsenal and Chelsea are the kings of it, and have 15 or 20 years of it behind them. Arsene Wengers side take a lot of stick, but think about how often they nick late goals in gritty matches. Last season, Liverpool were blowing teams away and fully deserving their wins, but it wasnt often they really ground out ugly wins like Manchester City or Chelsea did at times. There were hard-fought wins Fulham and West Ham, but in truth, its hard to think of more than a couple during Rodgers tenure. The Reds can quite often boss games, but then one error sees them fall behind and facing an uphill battle. You have to look no further than last weekends loss to United at Old Trafford. Liverpool had completely dominated the first 15 minutes or so, but Raheem Sterling missed a golden chance to open the scoring, the hosts broke away and Wayne Rooney clinically made it 1-0. It was ruthless; something Rodgers just cannot make his side. To win a game they have to dominate it, and its hugely frustrating.
