Former Reds' manager Gerard Houlier demonstrated his immense faith in Gerrard by stripping Sami Hyypia of his captaincy duties (Gerrard later directly apologised to the Fin) and handing it to the 23-year-old midfielder.

Despite his youth, Houlier was quick to point out Gerrard’s undoubted leadership qualities and decided that in October 2003, it was the right moment to elect him as captain before the 3-0 UEFA Cup victory over Olympia Ljubljana.

Again, citing Gerrard’s autobiography, he stated: “Sometimes I stop on the drive home from Melwood and just sit in the car and tell myself, ‘I’m captain of Liverpool football club’. I think of all the greats who have led out Liverpool, real leaders like Alan Hansen, Graeme Souness, Phil Thompson. And now me”.
