Liverpool Transfer News: Joe Allen Confirmed As Target

Sky Sports, new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that he would be interested in bringing Swansea midfielder Joe Allen to Anfield, but maintains that there are currently no negotiations for a deal happening between his board and his former employers in Wales. Northern Irish manager Rodgers wants a reunion with the midfielder who ranked among the top players in the country for passing stats last year, having already brought in former Swansea man Fabio Borini. Rodgers built his midfield around Allen's creativity and range of passing and he is said to be keen to bring those skills into a Liverpool squad whose midfield was often criticised last season, and was occasionally left looking quite bare when both Steven Gerrard and Lucas were out injured. The Anfield boss has already admitted making an enquiry about Fulham's Clint Dempsey and it seems he is now happy to talk about his other plans, including Allen, who we suggested as a perfect option for Liverpool to buy two weeks ago:

"I have a great relationship with Swansea but if there is a market for any of the players, I would like to be in that market. They respect that. He is a very talented player, which everyone knows but there is nothing more at the moment. When players come to a club such as Liverpool, it's never straightforward. There are always other barriers and difficulties. At this moment, there are ongoing negotiations on a few targets. We hope we're close to some deals. I need to evaluate the players we have and assess the squad and bring some in to bring freshness to the group. As a manager you want them in sooner rather than later but the main thing is to get them in before the beginning of the season. If we do that, our job will be done."
