Liverpool Transfer News: Manchester City's James Milner Set To Hold Talks With Reds

The Reds are closing in on their primary transfer target - and on a free transfer.

Liverpool are set to hold talks with Manchester City midfielder James Milner as the Reds attempt to lure the England international away from the Etihad on a free transfer. Arsenal are also chasing Milner's signature, with the 29-year-old due to become available on a Bosman deal having allowed his five-year contract at Man City run down this season. However, it appears that the two-time Premier League winner is keen to remain in the North West and believes he is more likely to be a regular starter at Anfield - particularly if Raheem Sterling moves on this summer - than at the Emirates.
Although the 53-cap England international is believed to have been offered a new deal by the Citizens - worth in excess of £150,000 a week - he is keen to explore all his options as he wants assured first-team football. If he does leave, he will complete the switch on July 1st - once his Man City contract expires. Intriguingly, Milner has actually featured in 32 Premier League games for Man City this season - his most ever for the club - but he is keen on speaking to Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers over a potential transfer.
The winger started his career at Leeds United, where he became the youngster-ever player to score a Premier League goal, before moving to Newcastle United for £3.6 million in July 2004. After initially being loaned to Aston Villa, he then moved permanently in 2009 for £12 million, and then Man City paid £26 million for his services in 2010. Since then, Milner has made 201 appearances for the Citizens in all competitions, scoring 18 goals - including eight in 45 games in 2014-15. At the Etihad Milner has claimed two Premier League titles (2011-12 and 2013-14), an FA Cup (2010-11), a League Cup (2013-14) and an FA Community Shield (2012).
