Liverpool Transfers: 10 Boyhood Reds Fans The Club Should Have Signed

How many Liverpool fans would offer to play for their club for free? If your hand hasn’t flung into the air, then you should hang your head in shame.

However, it’s a slightly different fare for professional footballers. Obviously, we can’t imagine lifelong Red Robbie Keane waltzed into Melwood eight years ago and declared that he no longer needed to earn a living. Andre Ayew however, has claimed that before Swansea swooped for his signature, he offered to do exactly that and play for his boyhood club for nothing.

When Liverpool rejected the offer, the Ghanaian punished them with a sumptuous brace in April’s 3-1 victory at the Liberty Stadium. Having supported the Reds since childhood, Ayew had offered to represent the club until January without being paid a dime in a bid to convince them to sign him up. Considering he went on to score 12 league goals - more than any Red - it’s fair to say that the transfer committee erred.

“All my life I have been a Liverpool fan. When I was young I was watching the Liverpool games. Steven Gerrard is my favourite player. It will not be easy to see him leave in the summer, but we all need a new challenge.” - Andre Ayew, April 2015.
