Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife.

With Liverpool in the hunt for a left-back, how they could do with the Beatle lookalike from across Stanley Park. For ten years, Leighton Baines has been a brilliant Premier League left-back, excelling in both the attacking and defending facets of the game. Possessing a wonderfully whipped cross and a delicious free-kick, it’s no wonder that Man United were sniffing around him on more than one occasion during his career.

The Kirkby-born 31-year-old may be a fully-fledged Evertonian now, but try as he might, he can’t escape the past. Toffees fans would rather forget the he used to be a Red, but there was only always going to be a 50% chance of that happening.

“As a boy I supported Liverpool. As a local lad I used to watch from the Kop when Robbie Fowler was making his name. I started out at Liverpool’s Centre of Excellence and although it was disappointing when nothing came of it, it was lucky that both Wigan and Wolves wanted to sign me. I haven’t bought my son a mini Liverpool kit… yet!” - Leighton Baines, December 2004.

He would have been an excellent acquisition for Liverpool but they were beaten to the punch by their Merseyside neighbours.
